"Say no to crack" or What's new with the Hondoo

I put in the new radiator and was smelling exhaust. I had not had a three bean burrito in a few days, so it had to be the car. I decided to put some gaskets in the exhaust manifold, and lookie what I found.

A cracked manifold - like cracked in half and patched with JB Weld. Now that takes talent, let me tell you.
Not only that, the oxygen sensor had been cross-threaded up in the manifold and stripped - it's just jammed in there. Joy.

My buddy Cory said there's nothing Jack Daniels can't fix, so we started the tear down.

While in there, we replaced the gaskets (and they needed it),
the manifold, the warped powers steering pump pulley (someone had put to much tension on it)
and a few trim pieces.

When it came time to put the new heat shield on there was a problem - can you see it here?

Someone in China had forgotten to punch out a hole for the dip stick. Joy. So we cleaned up the old one and used that instead.

Once it was all buttoned up for the night, we looked at the hood.
I was thinking about putting a Rat Fink on it to cover up a few scratches. Cory said, "Go ahead, I'll wait."

So, at 11:30 p.m. on a 42-degree night in Texas, we cranked up the shop heater, poured more Jack, and here is the sequence of the paint job that ended at 2:30 am. Sketched it out, then some down and dirty airbrush work Blended in the body colors. Added more detail base colors. Started the line work in black. And just like that.. Finked and ready for action. We got the door rubbers in this week.Found out that when it was broken into and the stereo stolen ,the crooks took the car alarm as well. So we put in a new one. Added a new upper radiator hose. And this weekend, the new pan seal and the new antenna.

It's close and ready for daily driver duty. What's left on the punch list? Rear seal, timing belt, driver side spring, and paint

And thanks to the Redhead, it's got a name now. "The Little Red Cherry Bomb."

The way you Fink things up, I'm surprised Beth doesn't have a R.F. tattoo!

So a few stoopid questions from the enamel paint idiot in the back:

Did you scuff the hood up w/ sandpaper before painting?

Did you clearcoat after painting?

The hood was scuffed up enough that all i had to do was hit it with 900 Wax and grease remover.
As for a clear coat, You really don't need it with One Shot paint. If you want to clear it you need to put some hardner in the paint and dust it a few passes with the clear before laying down a nice wet coat. Being this is a bented and pealing beater I'm not going to worry about it. All it needs is two coats of paste wax after it flashes for a week.
